What's In Store

Paityn came home the other day just yammering (Corbin's word for when one of us talks a lot) about her friends and all the fun they are having doing this and that.  I sat there and listened to her and thought of the fun times that she will have to remember with these friends.  I have to admit that at some point I was listening but not taking in everything that she said until I heard this, "Mom, we are kind of like you and your friends."  As I began to catch on I realized that she was talking about Shamree, Kendra, Stacy and I.  She was saying that there were four of them and four of us.  It really got me thinking.  How has time changed what my friends and I are.  Which, in turn also made me really reminisce about the four friends that I hold so dear....

Kendra... Well, there is nothing about us now that would ever remind you of this, but there was a time in our lives when we used to be accused of being easy to mix up who was who. I would walk down the hall and people would start talking to me only to realize that I wasn't Kendra.  We can blame a MUCH thinner me, haircuts that were the same and glasses that were almost identical.  The funny thing is that for we got paired up together.  When my family moved here in 1993 the school matched my schedule to Kendra's.  Except for our foreign language classes, we had every single class together. She was my school assigned "buddy."  Who knew that I would some day thank the school for that pairing as she has become not only a dear friend, but also a very special sister in Christ.

Stacy... Again, the school system is to thank. Your freshman year of high school you do a "walk-thru" of your schedule so that you can be prepared on the first day of school.  Well, as I left band and ventured through all the rest of my classes I realized that there were two girls in nearly every one of my classes.  Stacy was one of them.  Our friendship had some roads of being close and then a couple of years of growing apart, but now I can't imagine life without her.  We are about as opposite as two women can be, but deep down, I think we were meant to be.

Shamree... My laffy taffy buddy.  We met our freshman year of high school when we found that our lockers were right next to each other.  We decided to see just how many laffy taffy wrappers we could collect in a year.  I will NEVER be able to look at the candy again without thinking of my dear friend.  I also have to thank this dear friend for figuring out every way possible to fold a piece of paper.  I think I spent much of my freshman year writing notes back and forth with this lady.  I decided to invite her to youth group and the rest is history.  So many years of funny stories... and NO I did not see the pool behind me when I stepped backwards.

We have traveled so many roads together; from marriage and babies to death and divorce. We have laughed and cried together.  These ladies have stood by me and held me up when I couldn't stand on my own two feet.  I truly thank the Lord for the blessing they each are in my life.

We have gone from four girls to four girls, three husbands, one boyfriend, seven children, one nephew who might as well be another child, three dogs, and three cats.

So, as I sit and have my moments of being a sentimental fool I am reminded that you can't ever take for granted four friends that the school district helped put together.  You never know when someone much greater was just using the school as a tool.  I can't wait to see what is in store for these girls....
